Making a Tree Identification by means of studying the leaves
But what to do when it comes to identifying different types of leaves? The leaves can be classified into simple and compound leaves. Have you seen a maple tree? Did you see the maple trees, beech, oak and several others on a stem. These are simple leaves.
The compound leaves have a feathery appearance. The difference lies in the fact that a number of leaflets are attached in a long leaf stalk. These can be categorized into pinnate and clapping. Pinnate is the term used for trees with feather shaped leaves. Webbed, as the name implies, resembles the shape of our hand. It has many palm leaves growing from the tip of the stem.
The leaves can be identified by their different ways. The leaves can be smooth, toothed or lobed. You can also take a look at the intricate details. There may be different types of patterns. You could see if they match the same level along opposite sides of the stem.
The different types of leaves may be toothed or lobed marked by the shape or size of your teeth and lobes respectively. You can see the texture or the smell associated with the leaves. A great example is the cedar, which can be recognized with the aroma alone gives to the wood.
